Laguna Hills Hosts Food Waste Recycling Virtual Town Hall

Recycling Town Hall

The City of Laguna Hills invites community members to a Virtual Town Hall on Thursday, February 9 from 6:30-7:30pm to learn more about the City’s Food Waste Recycling Program. The program, which was initially launched in July 2022, is a partnership with CR&R Waste Services in response to California’s Short-Lived Climate Pollutant Reduction regulation (SB 1383).

“With community participation, the Food Waste Recycling Program will continue to generate positive results in our City and environment at-large,” said Deputy City Manager Dave Reynolds. “We’re excited to collaborate with CR&R on this Town Hall to educate residents on the process and further progress sustainability in Laguna Hills.”

The Laguna Hills Food Waste Recycling Program involves co-collecting food scraps and yard waste in your green cart for conversion into compost, as part of the state’s goal to reduce organic waste disposal by 75%. The goal, and new city program, all stem from state requirements designed to reduce the amount of methane emissions produced from organic waste in landfills.

Town Hall attendees will receive an overview of the SB 1383 legislation and its impact on the waste sorting process for residents in Laguna Hills. CR&R will share at-home food waste recycling tips to help residents utilize tools like kitchen compost pails, and residents who have successfully implemented the new sorting program will have the opportunity to share their experience and feedback.

“The Town Hall is a great opportunity for residents to learn more about the program from both CR&R and their neighbors,” Reynolds explained. “We invite them to come prepared to ask questions and provide any feedback on the program.”
